A.T. Still University Medical School

atsu-coverFamily HealthCare Network has joined forces with A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine at Arizona to recruit top students from the Central Valley who wish to pursue a career in medicine. As part of a unique “Hometown” program, Family Healthcare Network encourages local students to “dare to dream” of becoming physicians. The program is a unique strategy to find community residents who want to go to medical school and return to their hometown community to practice medicine.

Many of our local young people don’t think college is a possibility, and have never imagined they could go to medical school. We at Family HealthCare Network are able to help through a unique partnership with ATSU. The new medical school model has students on the ATSU campus in Arizona for one year. The second, third, and fourth years of medical school are spent in small groups located at a community health center like Family Healthcare Network. As we continue our partnership with the medical school program, we are excitedly seeing the emergence of future community physicians.

Physician Assistant Program

In September 2013, Family HealthCare Network announced that it has extended its relationship with A.T. Still University Medical School and now offers a Physician Assistant Graduate Program. Family HealthCare Network serves as 1 of 11 A.T Still University community campuses throughout the United States and is currently in its 5th year of enrollment.

The Master of Science Physician Assistant Degree Program is an entry-level, 26-month program. Courses are designed with an emphasis on a strong academic foundation and clinical practice. Faculty and staff work closely with students, developing the professional attitudes and clinical problem-solving skills necessary for optimum patient care.

LMCLogoFamily HealthCare Network has also partnered with Lutheran Medical Center Dental (LMC Dental) Program based out of Brooklyn, New York to establish a dental residency program at Family HealthCare Network health centers. The dental residency program is a 1-year advanced training program with the option of a second year extension and places dental residents in community health center sites for comprehensive general dentistry training. In this unique program, dental residents gain practice experience in a large group environment providing oral health care to their patients while working alongside a team of general and dental specialists, hygienists and assistants, physicians, and other health care professionals. LMC Dental has pioneered the innovative concept of a community health center (CHC) center-based postdoctoral dental residency program and is now the largest of its kind.

The new dental residency program builds upon over twenty years of dental programming offered by Family HealthCare Network. The organization currently has seven dental sites located throughout Tulare and Kings County. Dental services are offered in Porterville, Visalia, Goshen, Woodlake, Cutler and Hanford and Terra Bella. FHCN’s dental services include dental exams, digital x-rays, cleanings, fillings, dental sealants and education in preventive care. These services are available to adults as well as children, and are coordinated through the organization’s patient-centered service model.

Community health and oral health outreach is also an extension of the organizations efforts to promote oral health in the communities served. FHCN offers education through community outreach and has operated a successful KinderCare Program since 2009 through a partnership with First 5 Tulare County. This program is geared towards young children, ages 0-5 and helps increase access to dental care for rural and underserved Tulare County populations by providing perinatal oral health care and caregiver education, as well as screenings and protective fluoride varnishes for children 0-5. “Dental education and prevention plays an important role in one’s overall health and well-being,” stated Henry Cisneros, D.D.S., and Chief Clinical Officer for Family HealthCare Network.

Post-doctoral dental residents began their first year of advanced training at Family HealthCare Network beginning in July of 2014. Interested applicants may learn more about the application process at www.lmcdental.lmcmc.com.
