What Is Abdominal Pain?

Abdominal pain is any discomfort around the belly area. The severity and duration of abdominal pain can vary greatly because it is a common issue among people of all ages. But the FHCN team of providers can isolate the cause of your abdominal pain based on symptoms and location. During an examination, we will ask questions and use our expertise to determine why you are experiencing discomfort. This understanding will allow us to tailor a treatment plan to your needs.

What Causes Abdominal Pain?

There are numerous causes of abdominal pain. Some people suffer from this condition due to gas or indigestion. Others may experience it as a result of an infection or chronic condition. Recognizing the cause of your abdominal pain is crucial to treatment. When you visit Family HealthCare Network with abdominal pain, we will test for causes including:

  • Constipation
  • Food Intolerances
  • GERD
  • Viral Gastroenteritis
  • Ovulation Pain
  • Peptic Ulcer Disease

Types of Abdominal Pain

In addition to checking for the abdominal pain causes listed above, we will examine you to make sure you aren’t suffering from a serious medical condition. The location of your abdominal pain can be very telling. Based on which quadrant of your abdomen is hurting, we know how to check specific organs that may be causing your discomfort. They are:

Right Upper Quadrant

Upper right abdominal pain may indicate problems with your liver, gallbladder, or kidney. If you have sharp pains in this region, we will check for conditions such as hepatitis, gallstones, gallbladder or liver cancer, and kidney infections.

Left Upper Quadrant

The upper left quadrant of your abdomen is home to the pancreas, spleen, stomach, and left kidney. Therefore, upper left abdominal pain indicates we should test for gastritis, stomach ulcers, pancreatitis, and other maladies affecting these body parts.

Right Lower Quadrant

The lower abdomen is where your small and large intestines lie. Often, lower abdomen pain is associated with gastrointestinal diseases. But for women, lower abdomen pain may also be related to the uterus or ovaries.

The first organ we check for patients with lower right abdomen pain is the appendix. Appendicitis or, more seldom, appendix cancer could be the reason for it.

Left Lower Quadrant

Lower abdominal pain is typically more intense than upper abdominal pain. If your pain is isolated to the lower left abdomen, we may suspect diverticulosis or diverticulitis of the colon.

Diagnosing Abdominal Pain

With the location of your abdominal pain as our guide, we will quickly work to diagnose the root cause of your discomfort. FHCN uses state-of-the-art imaging equipment to examine your body closely and learn which organ – or organs – are contributing to your pain. Among the tools we may use are an abdominal X-ray, abdominal CT scan, and an abdominal ultrasound. These imaging devices will reveal the source of your pain and inform our treatment plan.

Abdominal Pain Treatment Options

At Family HealthCare Network, we customize treatments for each patient. There is no single cure for all abdominal pain issues. So, upon diagnosing your pain, we will create a full plan and explain it to you from the comfort of our office. In most cases, medication will be sufficient. It will minimize inflammation and provide quick pain relief. We will likely also suggest minor lifestyle changes to prevent recurrences.
